How to avoid distracted driving

There are many ways for drivers to become distracted while driving. It happens so frequently that over 1,000 people suffer injuries every single day in the United States as a result of distracted driving.

There are some simple ways you can avoid an auto accident by becoming distracted. Everyone should know to avoid looking at their smartphones and texting while driving. Here are some other ways you can be a safer driver and substantially decrease your chances of being in a collision:

Do not eat and drive

Many people do not see the harm in grabbing some drive-thru and eating while driving if they are in a hurry. However, this act forces you to take at least one hand off the steering wheel. You could distract yourself further if you end up spilling your food or drink. Give yourself plenty of time between destinations to enjoy a meal so you do not have to eat while driving.

Do not read maps

When you travel to a new place, you may need to use your phone's GPS. It is all right to use your phone in this instance, but you want to have your phone verbally give you the directions. Needing to read what is certainly small print can distract you long enough to end up in an accident.

Do not drive drowsy

After a long day, you may need to get behind the wheel late at night to go home. You need to be extremely cautious if you feel drowsy in the slightest. If you need to, you should pull off to the side of the road to rest. Do not drive faster to your destination so that you can go to bed sooner.

Avoid any other activities

When you are behind the wheel, the only thing you should do is drive. You should not mess with the radio; set it to the station you want before you head out. You should also never apply makeup, watch videos or search for items in the car while you drive.
